St. Scholastica orphanage and Babies Home is located in Rubaare in Ntungamo district. This is towards the border with Rwanda and about 400km away from Kampala.
The orphanage was started by the Benedictine Monastery to serve this poor community. Currently they take care of more than 150 children by giving them education, food and other support. A few of the children reside at the center, while the majority go back to their homes.
The biggest challenge for the orphanage and it’s surrounding community is access to safe and clean water. The children and the villagers walk to a surface pond that is about 3km away. The water in this pond is stagnant and dirty. Animals too drink from this pond.
The pond is deep and dangerous for the children. On a couple of occasions children have drowned and died in this pond while collecting water.
One of the leaders of the Orphanage contacted WHOLIVES seeking to in the Community Funded Well Program. They were referred to us for assessment.
We have visited the site and selected a suitable spot for drilling.
The community have also managed to pay a down payment. Work is set to start.
