Women travel in groups for safety while collecting water at Nsiika village

Nsiika is a semi urban community in Buhweju district. It hosts the administrative offices of the district and is also the main trading center. There is a health facility as well.  There are about 250 homes in this community and 3 schools as well.

Unfortunately, access to safe and clean water is a big challenge. Institutions like the health facility depend on rain water harvesting, while the majority of the homes collect water from swamps. Many children especially girls drop out of school because of water issues and they get married at a young age. With their own families, the cycle of poverty becomes vicious.  Incidences of water borne illnesses are rampant especially among children.

Kyomu and her daughter spend 4 hours every day collecting water. They always wish they spent this time working in the family garden as that would be more productive.
