Kiziba Primary school is located in Kiziba Village in Sheema district, Western Uganda. The school has a population of approx. 500 children coming from 2 villages since it’s the only nearby school. The community around the school has about 150 homes. The school and the community don’t have any source of clean water. They all depend on water collected from surface ponds in swamps and these ponds are very far from homes.
Late last year we drilled and constructed a community borehole at a school in this region. A child at this school had drowned and died in a pond while attempting to collect water. Because of this intervention, information about our Community Funded Well Program reached many schools in this region. Many schools with water challenges have reached out to us.
Photos: Prisca at home cleaning her kitchen utensils. Unfortunately with dirty water that causes typhoid especially to the children.
Prissca is a mother of 4. She operates a food stall in the village. Unfortunately she cant run her bussiness well and to the maximum because she is always around the village to collect water for her family. This affects her income.
In most cases, streams and surface water ponds are located down hill. The journey back to homes, up a hill, with water containers on the head is very tedious and a cause of many health problems for women.
Women and children have the responsibility to provide water for their homes. They spend alot of time moving back and forth to water ponds. Unfortunately when such water that is very far, is also very dirty, its a double tragedy for them.
