Esikhuyu Village, located in the hilly region of Vihiga County, Kenya, is home to approximately 300 households. While water streams are available, they are located far from the community and require residents, especially women and children, to climb steep hills while carrying heavy containers on their heads or backs. This daily routine is physically exhausting, time consuming, and dangerous, especially during rainy seasons when paths become slippery.
Access to clean water is a constant challenge. Many residents suffer from water-borne illnesses such as diarrhea and typhoid due to unprotected water sources. The lack of nearby, safe water also limits household hygiene, food preparation, and school attendance for children.
Manasseh is the local project coordinator, leading the initiative to bring a drilled well to Esikhuyu. Beyond meeting household water needs, Manasseh intends to productively use the well to support economic development projects which include short-term vegetable farming, brick making, and delivery services to those unable to fetch water themselves. Additionally, Manasseh plans to coordinate affordable water sales to sustain the project and ensure long-term community benefit.
