Refugees flock to Kicumu, Uganda, from war torn countries

Kicumu Village is a rural and remote community in Mpara sub county, Kyegegwa district, Western Uganda. This village is one of the host communities for new arriving refugees in this region. There are approximately 200 households and over 2200 people in this village, the majority being refugees from Congo and South Sudan.

Service delivery in this community is still very poor. Clean and safe water stands at less than 10% since there’s hardly any safe water source. People depend on streams which they share with their animals.

The water situation is made worse by the increasing number of refugees. There are always many people waiting in turns at the stream and some use it inappropriately and so cause further contamination. For example many wash their dirty clothes so close to the unprotected stream!

This community got to know about the Community Funded Well program just as we were drilling at our previous project.  A church leader mobilized the community members and they raised a down payment to enable them participate in this program.

An appropriate drilling point, close to homes, has been identified and work is set to begin.

Escaping war, but not water sickness
