Santrina, about 70 years old ,lives with 7 grandchidren. Her worse experience was when one of of these children was knocked down by a speeding motorcycle 2 years ago as she was on her way to fetch water for the family. This old lady is now determined to save the situation for all the children in her village. She has agreed to have the water vending point on her compound. She will be responsible for selling the water until the community loan is paid. She also expects to earn some income from the water sales so she can provide for her grandchildren. Ndese Upper is a ward located in Ndese Township in Kasawo sub county, Mukono district. The township serves as a trading centre for many villages with residents operating shops and make-shift stalls. It’s located along the highway that connects Mukono to Kayunga and Jinja. This trading centre is also a residential area for many casual workers from nearby sugarcane plantations.
Ndese upper and Ndese lower are separated by the busy highway (road). Unfortunately most water sources are in the lower part, so people are forced to keep carelessly crossing the road. It’s a big problem and cause of accidents especially to the children.
In fear of the associated risks, people resort to using very dirty water in ponds, than crossing the road to look for safe water.
But also, the water sources on the other side of the road are always over crowded. It takes several hours for one to be able to get wate
