So many kids missing school in Kibati, Uganda

Kibati is a rural and hard to reach community in Buhweju district, Western Uganda. The mountainous terrain of the area makes it very hard to reach and therefore difficult in terms of service delivery.

Access to safe and clean water is a huge problem. The nearest borehole is more than 5kms away, so the approximately 2000 people of this village entirely depend on surface streams and ponds for all their water needs. These surface water sources are shared with animals and they are located down hill, so they are very prone to contamination from the shallow pit latrines in homes which are located uphill.

Pictured: A group of children walking from one of the current water sources. It was a school day, but all these children had not gone to school even though they are age appropriate. They all said that they needed to stay home and collect water for their families

This community has a new borehole!
