1500 people live in Kantobo

Kantobo is a rural village located in Rubaare in Ntungamo district. This is towards the border with Rwanda and about 400km away from Kampala.  There about 1500 people and 150 households in this community.

The community is close to St. Scholastica Orphanage where a community funded well was constructed early this year.

The biggest challenge for the  community is access to safe and clean water.  The children and women if the village  walk to a surface pond that is about 3km away. The water in this pond is stagnant and dirty. Animals too drink from this pond.

The pond is deep and dangerous for the children. On a couple of occasions children have drowned and died in this pond while collecting water.

Emmanuel, 56 yrs old, is a local leader of this community. He walked with us the 3km to the swamp to show us one of the ponds that the community uses. He used the opportunity to take back home 20 litres of water . He has 2 cows and because he can’t always take water to them, many times he brings them to drink at the same pond that people use.

We have visited the site and selected a suitable spot for drilling.

The activity of walking or riding very far to collect water comes with lots of challenges for the children. They get exposed to many dangers. These children had to go through the rain all way from the water source back home.
