Kaganjo B water project for pineapple and maize farmers

Richard, 11 years old, and his frineds make al least 3 trips to this well every day. They need at least 2 hours on each trip. This denies them an opportunity to do their school-home work, or even a time to play and have fun.

Kaganjo B is a rural village in Kasawo subcounty, Mukono district. The village has a population of up to 1000 people, in about 120 households.  The main economic activity in this community is subsistence farming; growing mainly pineapples and Maize.

Like many other rural communities in Uganda, access to safe water in this community is a challenge. There’s hardly any protected water source on the village. People depend on surface water sources like ponds or streams. If they have to access clean water, they will walk more than 4km to nearby boreholes.

To host their pineapple and Maize yields, most farmers apply chemicals in their gardens. Unfortunately, these chemicals will always find their way to the unprotected surface water ponds.  This is posing a very serious health challenge for the people. They are worried, as they are aware that this water contaminated with garden chemicals will cause them disease.
