Gombe village is a semi-urban community located in Wakiso District. The community has up to about 1,500 people. Some of the people live in an upscale setting with access to the national water pipeline within their residences. The majority live in a slum setting where they don’t have access to clean water. Most households in this setting get water from surface ponds, and it is often very contaminated and unsafe.
Justus is 10 years old and he is not happy with the quality of water for his family and entire community.
Irene, 13-years-old, walks 3km every morning and evening to get to this water source in the swamp. Because of this, she often goes late to school and she is worried that she will perform badly in her final exam and so can’t go on with her education.
The leaders of this village got to know about the community funded well program and approached us (Suubi) for support. Training was offered and the community showed commitment towards the project. They have been able to raise a down payment of $700. A borehole will be drilled and constructed in the village. Water will be sold off the borehole to the community members until the loan amount is paid off.
