Bwambara village is a rural community located in Nazigo sub county, Kayunga district. The village has a population about 1,000 people, in about 120 households. The village has 1 school with an enrolment of approx. 300 children.
The main economic activity in this community is subsistence farming; growing mainly pineapples and Maize.
Just like was the case for the neighboring village of Nsiima where we recently drilled, and many other villages in this district, access to safe water in this community is a challenge. There’s hardly any protected water source in the village. School children, and everyone in the village depend on surface water sources like ponds or streams. If they have to access clean water, they will walk more than 4km to nearby boreholes.
To boost their pineapple and Maize yields, most farmers apply chemicals in their gardens. Unfortunately, these chemicals will always find their way to the unprotected surface water ponds. This is posing a very serious health challenge for the people. They are worried, as they are aware that this water contaminated with garden chemicals will cause them diseases like cancer!
Some community members from this village approached our team most recently, while they were drilling at the neighboring village, with a request participate in the Community Funded Well Program. We explained to them the challenges we have had with most communities failing to pay their loans. We explained to them the Community Water vending point option, and that this means they will be buying the water until their loan is fully paid. They found it a possible option.
Unfortunately Bwambara village is not yet connected to the National Electric grid. We can only provide them with a hand pump but they will be able to sell water from it.
A down payment has been raised, and work is scheduled to start.
