Buyera is a slum on the outskirts of Kampala city. It’s located in Mumyuka subcounty, Wakiso District. This community is only 2km away from the office of our drilling partners office. Like any slum, the community here is mainly composed of street vendor and their families, children who are begging on the streets during the day and all kinds of unprivileged city dwellers. Social services including safe water access are very poor in this area with close to 100 families. Their only current source of water is surface water which they pull from a nearby swamp. The community itself is very close to the swamp, so people don’t have to walk far to get the water, but it’s very dirty and unsafe. The swamp water is full of effluent (Waste water) from nearby towns. Leaders of a church working in this area approached our drilling partner seeking support for this community. They were asking for a donated funded well. We informed them about the Community Funded Well Program and asked to be given time to train more members of the community. The church gave us chance to talk to the community members at one of the Sunday Services. We have continued to meet some community leaders and members as we work out on how best to save their situation. The church has offered land on which the well shall be constructed. Out team have visited the site and it’s very suitable for us to drill.
Please help us bring clean water to the Buyera slum.
