Butare Village is a rural and remote community in Buhweju District, Western Uganda. There are approximately 180 households and over 2000 people in this village.
Service delivery in this community is still very poor. Access to the clean and safe water which is less than 10% is difficult since there’s hardly any safe water source. People depend on streams which are very far away in swamps and shared with animals.
The water situation is made worse by the drying up of the current springs and streams due to much gardening in the swamps. There are always many people waiting in turn at the stream and some use it inappropriately and so cause further contamination. For example many wash their dirty clothes so close to the unprotected stream!
