Alice and Dora live in Rwampanga, Uganda

Rwampanga is a rural village in Shuuku subcounty, Sheema district. The village has a population of up to 1500 people, in about 150 households.  The main economic activity in this community is subsistence farming; growing mainly Matooke ( green banana).

Like many other rural communities in Uganda, access to safe water in this community is a challenge. There’s hardly any protected water source on the village. People depend on surface water sources like ponds or streams. If they have to access clean water, they will walk more than 5km to nearby boreholes.

To boost their garden yields, most farmers apply chemicals in their gardens. Unfortunately, these chemicals will always find their way to the unprotected surface water ponds.  This is poses a very serious health challenge for the people.

There is only community school in this village. Many children especially girls at the school drop out at an early age, just because of water challenges.

Alice is a teacher at the Community School in this village. With her daugther, Dora, they wake up at 5am to collect water for home use before they go to school. It takes them at least 3 hours to be able to make breakfast. Alice and Dora are always very tired when they get to school and this affects their perfomance.
Some community members from this village approached Suubi with a request to participate in the Community Funded Well Program, way back in 2021.
