Oscar, a 7 yr-old, is very concerned about the quality of water they are using. He says its full of frogs and other small animals. He is sure it wil make him sick, but they have no alternative.
Oliver runs a stall selling vegetables and charcoal. Most of her customers are avaialble to buy early in the morning or late in the evening. Unfortunately this is the time she also has to walk the long distance to collect water for her young family. This has affected her business because she can’t serve her customers in time.
The women operating stalls and other businesses are often forced to waste more that 3 hours off their work to walk long distances in search for clean water. When they finally get the water, they have to carry the big containers on their heads back home in a long distance. This is a very tiresome activity. In most cases they will be very exhausted to perform well at their businesses.
Nakifuma East is a semi urban community serving as a trading centre for about 5 villages. The community has approximately 200 households in the trading centre. There are also 2 schools with an enrolment of approx 250 children per school.
Most of the people living in this community are doing informal jobs, mainly boda boda riders and street vendors. Boda boda is a means of public transport by motorcycle.
The community currently depends on surface ponds filled with rain run off water. This kind of water is stagnant and dirty.
The community approached us with a request to drill for them a Community Funded Well. One of the women operating a good stall has offered the space and commitment to vend the water so as to pay back their loan.
