Chirongo Village is on the coast of Kenya in Kwale County. With a population of nearly 950 people, most villagers are farmers and do agriculture for cash crops and animal farming. Water is the main challenge in the area.
Village women with young children on their backs have been spending 6 hours a day fetching water for home use. Hand-dug wells dry up during the dry season. Other than the hand-dug well, the majority get their water from a dam and share the same source with livestock, so water-related illness is common. Boreholes will be a safer water source, and the community will save money on medical bills and other costs associated with dirty water.
Children miss school due to water challenges in the area and hope to enjoy clean water soon.
