A mom of 4 makes the long walk for water at Magala, Uganda

Susana is a mum of 4 children. All her children are under 5 years old and she carries the responsibility of providing water for the family. She has to walk 3Kms to and from the community water source, at least 2 times each day,

Magala is a rural village in Nazigo subcounty, Kayunga district. The village has a population of up to 1500 people, in about 200 households.  The main economic activity in this community is subsistence farming; growing mainly maize , pineapples and potatoes

Like many other rural communities in Uganda, access to safe water in this community is a challenge. There’s hardly any protected water source on the village. People depend on surface water sources lie ponds which they share with animals. If they have to access clean water, they will walk more than 5km to nearby boreholes.

To boost their garden yields, most farmers apply chemical fertilizers in their gardens. Unfortunately, these will always find their way to the unprotected surface water ponds.  This poses a very serious health challenge for the people.

There is only 1 community school in this village. Many children especially girls at the school dropout at an early age, just because of water challenges. The available community water source is not suitable for home use since the water is dirty and stagnant but it is all they have.

The school headteacher and teachers approached Suubi with a request to participate in the Community Funded Well Program.

It's not the children's fault. Let's turn it around!
